A good day for VR

The last 24 hours have been striking.

Sony announced Project Morpheus (Road to VR), a 1080p display and 1000Hz sampling.

Oculus VR had previously stated they would not be releasing a new developer’s kit – I suppose that’s what you call tactics. It’s also a lovely thing to release just as Sony is attempting to gain influence on the VR gaming field.

The Oculus Rift DK2 promises a 1080p display, and seems to be based heavily on the Crystal Cove prototype.

I suppose they had no choice – Dev Kit 1 is, after all, sold out world wide.

While most VR enthusiasts are bummed about Sony attempting to get a foothold in the VR market, I think this is a great day for VR. The VR market technically doesn’t existthere is no such thing as a consumer’s Rift as of yet.

And honestly, before Sony suddenly jumped, did we see any real competition to the Oculus Rift?

Sony’s release creates a challenge in the VR world. We now have a battle for profits, development and most importantly: time.

I do not believe that the VR of the future will have anything less than full immersive visuals. Sony’s proposed “90 degrees plus” field of vision is certainly no match for the Rift’s 360 degrees – especially with positional head tracking implemented.

I am cheering for Oculus VR and their future, but I’m also overjoyed to see some pressure applied – competition is always a good thing for new technological development.
